Symptoms

After you install the hotfix 955262 on System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) site servers, you may encounter one of the following problems:

  • Problem 1
Users cannot enumerate collection members if they have read permissions on a collection instance but not on the collection class.
Additionally, the following errors are logged in the Smsprov.log file:
CSspQueryForObject::GetColumnName, Unable to find property "XYZ0000D" in class SMS_CM_RES_COLL_XYZ0000D
    Execute WQL =<SQL statement>
    Execute SQL =<SQL statement>
    Results returned: 0 of -1
  • Problem 2
The Task Sequence Media Wizard under Operating System Deployment does not list task sequences that need a boot image.
  • Problem 3
The counters in the Component Status window are not reset to zero as expected.

[Virtualisation] Finding Cost Savings in the Cloud

Looks like Microsoft is already realising significant cost saving from Cloud computing as this video posted on the TechNet Edge website demonstrates:

Jon Schmitz explains to Isaac Roybal how his organization, the Commercial Technical Support Labs in Microsoft Support, has put together seven "private cloud" sites around the world to realize a host of resource use efficiencies, resulting in substantial cost savings. Jon details what Microsoft virtualization solutions are involved and how they helped reduce the number of desktops support engineers had to maintain, reduce the organization's carbon footprint, and improve response efficiency, among other benefits...

[MMS] System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2

In this demo Jeff Wettlaufer demonstrates how to use ConfigMgr SP2 to deploy Windows 7 WIRELESSLY using vPro. AND with Windows 7 and the new version of USMT you can do an in-place upgrade WITHOUT having to move the user data off the machine, re-image it and then squirting the user data back down to the machine again - WOW how cool is that?

PS - Check out the “Accountants” ;-)

[ConfigMgr] How To Check If A BITS Enabled Distribution Point Is Up And Running

You all know by now that I’m all for a simple life which is why I LOVE people sharing their knowledge and I like to return the favour and the latest post from Carlos’ blog is a real gem:

To check if a Management Point is up and running we have the mplist and mpcert http URLs that we can open in Internet Explorer.  We don’t have such URLs to test if a Distribution Point (DP) is up. Management Point and Distribution Point servers are very different roles.  The Management Point is a conduit for the clients to get information from the SQL database i.e. their cert, their machine policy, etc.  That is why there is a way to use an http link to get that information from SQL through the MP.  A DP is nothing but a server share.  To use BITS for downloads, we expose that share through a virtual IIS directory...

[MMS] Ever wondered what Prep goes into the Keynote Demos?

I saw this on the TechNet Edge site (thanks for the tipoff Peter about this site ;-) and thought it would be cool to share this video that shows the behind the scenes prep that Jeff, Wally and the gang did ahead of the MMS keynote where they upgraded 20ish laptops from XP to Windows 7. Now not only was it scary enough that they did this “on the fly” but even more amazing they were going to attempt to do it WIRELESSLEY to demo that this new feature in the upcoming  ConfigMgr SP2 works.

Fascinating stuff:
