[SMS] SMS 2003: ITMU v3 requires two passes, two reboots, to deploy April 2010 security patches

This was mentioned on today’s MVP call with the Product Group, which apparently caused a few issues for some of you. So just in case any of you missed it I thought I’d re-post this from the Configuration Manager Support Team Blog:

“We've been getting some calls about this one so I thought it deserved a mention here. If you're having some ITMU related issues with the April 2010 security patch install then you'll want to take a quick read of this one. Note that this issue only affects SMS 2003. Our currently supported products, ConfigMgr 2007 and WSUS 3.0, do not share this limitation.

Issue: Deployment of the April 2010 security patches requires two executions of PatchInstall.exe and may require two reboots of the client. On the first execution, the PatchInstall.log shows:

And on the second execution, after the reboot, the same log shows:

Cause: MS10-019 shipped as two KBs - KB978601 and KB979309 - with KB978601 requiring that KB979309 be installed in order to install successfully. ITMU v3 has a limitation that results in PatchInstall.exe trying to install KB978601 first.

Resolution: Per http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=2890, SMS 2003 mainstream support ended on January 12, 2010. As such, no further updates to ITMU will be released and use of the work-around - running the Patch Install package twice - is required.

It is important to note that our currently supported products, SCCM 2007 and WSUS 3.0, do not share this limitation and can deploy the current security patches in one pass.

RSS Feeds for KB Articles for all Microsoft products

I remember a while back discovering the RSS Feeds for ConfigMgr and SMS Knowledge Base articles but misplaced them. So off I went trawling through the Microsoft site and I came across the RSS Feed Product Index.

This is basically an index of ALL Microsoft products with a link to an RSS feed containing the most recent KB articles for that product.

Weird thing is there is no entry (that I can find) for OpsMgr 2007. There IS however one for ConfigMgr (which is the complete reverse of KBAlertz).

It would also be cool if rather than having to click on each feed in turn to subscribe to it if Microsoft could allow you to simply select a checkbox beside the product(s) you're interested in and hit a "Subscribe" button to automatically generate the code you could then put into your Reader. Fingers crossed Microsoft are reading this ;-)

[MS KBs] Most Recent KBs for RSS Feeds

One of the most useful set of RSS Feeds I use to keep up-to-date with what is happening in Microsoft is their “Most Recent KBs for <product>” one’s. Now for some BIZARRE reason I don’t yet understand I’ve lost my subscriptions to a whole bunch of RSS feeds including these (I thought my Inbox was a bit TOO quiet). After a bit of Googling I managed to find the page on Microsoft’s website that shows their RSS feeds (http://www.microsoft.com/rss/ViewSearchResults.aspx?ln=en-US&ss=most+recent+kbs&sl=en-US).

Now to save you having to wade through thousands and thousands of results here’s a list for the products I’ve re-subscribed to and I hope you’ll find useful (and also in the future if any of us lose our subscriptions we can just hop back on here to grab the links). If there are any you think I should add let me know and I’ll update the list below.

SYMPTOMS

The software metering processor on a Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 3-based primary site server may return an invalid file size when it handles the software metering summarization data (.sum file) from a child site server.

The issue causes duplicate file entries in the SoftwareFile table. Additionally, one entry has an invalid file size (most likely 0). Inaccurate software metering reports are generated because of this issue.
