How the mouse cursor works ...
28 June 2007 09:23

Had to laugh at this!

The Japanese have finally revealed a mystery for you.

Haven't you wondered how the arrow on your computer monitor works when we move the mouse?

Now, through the miracle of high technology, we can see how it is done. With the aid of a screen-magnifying lens, the mechanism becomes apparent.

Click on link below to find out. The image may take a minute to download.

When it appears, slowly move your mouse over the large light grey circle and you will see how the magic works.

SMS2003 SP3 Webcast - Wally Mead
20 June 2007 09:41

Good webcast, seemed to be focused on people with no SP3 exposure to date.

The webcast, I took away the following:

  • The SMS2003 ICP packs for SP3 will be released at the end of this month
  • SMS2003 SP3 now supports SQL2005 (RTM, sp1, sp2)
  • Asset Intelligence is essentially a feature pack
  • Current OSDFPU is supported on SMS2003 SP3
  • ITMU V3 supported on SMS2003 SP3
  • DMFPU supported by SMS2003 SP3 after KB934206 has been applied
  • You can upgrade from SMS2003 SP1 to SMS2003 SP3 without installing SMS2003 SP2
  • DRW might detect the ipv6 address for a vista client and warn
  • Asset Intelligence is a closed system until SCCM is released. There are no editting tools to manipulate the Knowledge Base.
  • Remote Control tool cannot be used on Vista clients, Remote Assistance Et Al to be used instead. Fair enough, Remote.EXE was showing it's age ... handy but not essential when we have RDP

Things I didn't hear Wally say:

  • That he is going to take the WMUG team out for a few beers on his next UK visit!

Lots of info on the upgrade process, how to test the DB consistency, preparing for the upgrade, implementing said upgrade and then a brief run through the Asset Intelligence reports. Personally I didn't take much away from the webcast that I hadn't already skimmed from the www. The real jewel in the SP3 crown is Asset Intelligence, and I was expecting to hear a lot more about it ... such as how to edit the Knowledge Base and add in your own entries, but no tools exist for this until SCCM. There was even a hint at the Microsoft System Center feature Roadmap when System Center Service Manager was mentioned as managing License information.

Essentially the read-between-the-lines bottom line is that the development cycle for SMS2003 is winding down dramatically. Microsoft won't be showing the product much love, other than patching it and perhaps retro-fitting appropriate features from SCCM in to SMS2003. I think one of the silliest things Microsoft did with SMS2003 was split it's code-base in to SMS2003 and SMS2003 R2. If Asset Intelligence is a stand-alone module (Feature Pack), why didn't they just release all the components that make up R2 as a Feature Pack rather than creating two seperate products! Just smacks of a development team that is too small to manage it's overal responsibilities, and as a result is stretched too thin over a product that Microsoft should be SHOWING A LOT MORE LOVE TOO!

Double your Dev team, don't take shortcuts on the roadmap and keep your documentation in-line with you're releases!

OpMgr2007 Design Guide released
18 June 2007 14:13
Microsoft has just released the Operations Manager 2007 Design Guide to their download website.

This is really worth the read. The paper has good information about sizing, especially hardware requirements versus number of agents, which can be a real pain point for your deployment, if sized too small.

Download it here:

To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Star Wars, Lucasfilm Ltd. and The Cards Inc. Group will throw Europe's largest Star Wars party ever!

Taking over London's Earls Court Exhibition Centre for three days in July 2007, Star Wars Celebration Europe will be filled with live entertainment, celebrities from all six movies, special film and video presentations, an exhibit of movie props and costumes, exclusive merchandise, pop culture tributes, interactive events, a costume contest, and much, much more.

Star Wars Celebration Europe will take place from July 13 to July 15 2007. "I'm thrilled that we're finally going to have an official Star Wars event in the U.K., and especially to celebrate 30 years of the saga," said Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm's head of fan relations. "George Lucas has referred to the London area as the "spiritual home" of Star Wars since four of the movies were shot here, making this the ideal site for our first Celebration Europe event."

SMS2003: Problem with Installing SMS2003 AdvCli from SMS2003 Secondary Site server
05 June 2007 13:01

This problem is probably documented somewhere, I stumbled in to it recently in a production environment and thought i'd write about it!

We have a custom executable that clients run at logon, that pretty much emulates CAPINST.EXE. It determines from the SLP which Site the client should assign too based on it's current IP Subnet, and generates a CCR which it deposits on to the selected Site server. This is great, its what you want, as an AdvCli installation from a Secondary means that the Client does not need to reach out across to a distant subnet to obtain the installation files.

It's an ok tool, however it does not care if the client is Advanced or Legacy and blindly generates CCR's on the SMS Site that manages the Subnet the client is on. No problem I hear you say, well if the Secondary doesn't have IIS and an (P)MP installed then things go a bit pear shaped quickly as shown below:

$$<SMS_CLIENT_CONFIG_MANAGER><Wed Jun 05 11:32:39.635 2007 GMT Daylight Time><thread=1868 (0x74C)>
---> Client type to be installed on Server7: Advanced client $$<SMS_CLIENT_CONFIG_MANAGER><Wed Jun 05 11:32:39.635 2007 GMT Daylight Time><thread=1868 (0x74C)>
---> No MP shares. Will not push the mobile client to Server7 $$<SMS_CLIENT_CONFIG_MANAGER><Wed Jun 05 11:32:39.635 2007 GMT Daylight Time><thread=1868 (0x74C)>
---> Failed to install CCM Client Bootstrap component on client (2)

However there are some things you should consider when installing an AdvCli from a Secondary Site server:

  • IIS MUST be installed on to the Secondary Site server
  • The Management Point role MUST be assigned to the Secondary Site server
  • Without the Management Point role being assigned, the SMSCLIENT share will NOT be created.

If IIS\MP not installed then a CCR will fail before it even touches the target machine with the CCM.LOG reporting "No MP Share.". The CCR will be retried until it is deleted resulting in no installation. Only way to work around this is to move the CCR's to Secondary Site servers Parent Primary site (which really should have IIS and an MP!)

Also you cannot just create the SMSCLIENT share and walk away, as there is a check performed to see if the MP is present.

No IIS\MP on a Secondary results in failure to deploy the AdvCli, but does not impact the installation of the Legacy Client. For AdvCli means that the client will report back to it's Assigned Management Point for EVERY communication it makes, skipping over the Secondary and talking directly to it's Parent. If you don't put IIS\MP on to a Secondary then your clients will communicate with their Assigned MP for everything, effectively making the Secondary a DP only.

So if you design an environment with Secondary Site servers that do not have IIS or an MP think again, and enable these components to benefit from local client installations and take some load off the network using the Proxy Management Point.
