• Configuration Manager 2012 Powershell inventory tool

First of all I can’t take any credit for putting this script together but I can highly recommend you using it. Friend of WMUG David O’Brien has put together a huge powershell script which will trawl through your Configuration Manager site and output the configuration information into a nicely formatted Word document.

  • October 18th 2013 – A date to forget?

To follow on from my previous blog post about the Microsoft 2012 R2 wave of products (http://wmug.co.uk/wmug/b/peter_egerton/archive/2013/08/18/october-18th-2013-a-date-to-remember.aspx) which were scheduled for release on October 18th 2013, it seems Microsoft have sprung a surprise on us and released part of the ‘R2 wave’ early.

Yesterday (09/09/13) Microsoft made Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 RTM available through…

  • October 18th 2013 – A date to remember?

So it was announced late last week that the R2 wave Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012 products is to be RTM on October 18th 2013. In parallel to these releases Microsoft is also going live with the long awaited Windows 8.1. This is surely the biggest date in Microsoft’s calendar this year, the success of Windows 8.1 alone will have a big effect on the industry as a whole, I’m sure the likes of Apple and Google…

  • State Migration Point Disk space notification

Here’s a real quirky feature I noticed this week which might catch you out if you sometimes scan read messages as I often do.

This is in Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 and I am using a State Migration Point configured with a minimum free space setting of 10GB. I noticed every 5 minutes that there was an information message appearing in All Status Messages through the Status Message Viewer:

“There is not enough free disk…

  • What would you ask an MVP?

Following my recent interviews at TechEd Europe with Enterprise Client Management MVP’s I thought I would reach out to the community and find out what you would ask an MVP if you had the opportunity? I’m not looking for specific technical issues on how to fix a problem you have – we’re not giving away free consultancy here!

It might be technical, non-technical, inquisitive, personal (not too personal!) or whatever else…

  • Configuration Manager 2012 Build and Capture task sequence bug?

From what I can see this has been around from SP1 beta bug as yet has not been fixed. The environment I’m testing with is Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 with MDT 2012 Update integration.

When you come to generate a ‘Build and Capture’ task sequence you see the following…

  • Integrating MDT 2012 with Configuration Manager

This is possibly one of best ‘minimum effort maximum gain’ jobs you can do in your Configuration Manager installation, it’s a real no-brainer. By integrating Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) with Configuration Manager you get the best of both worlds in your deployment scenarios as MDT can extend the functionality of Configuration Manager, pretty much the only limitation becomes your imagination and best of all it’s…

  • Add Non-Microsoft licence information into Configuration Manager 2012

In order to get the most out of your Microsoft System Center 2012 investment you'll no doubt want to get the Asset Intelligence features of Configuration Manager (SCCM) working. You can add your Microsoft Volume licensing statement into SCCM but what if you want to add in non-Microsoft licences? Now I'm making an assumption here that you'll already have software inventory enabled on your clients as this is a pre-requisite…

  • Administering and Deploying System Center 2012 Configuration Manager – 70-243 exam guide

Having passed this exam a number of different Microsoft exams myself, I thought some people may find it useful to get some feedback and guidance from someone who’s been there and done it. Now obviously I’m not going to give away any answers or suggest what the questions may include due to the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) that goes with taking Microsoft exams. What I can do is point you in the right direction regarding…

  • Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 Management Point Installation Error 1603

I fell foul of this problem this week where I had been installing a System Center Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 site server. This was a new build Windows Server 2012 but as I began the installation a handy error message alerted me to the existence of an SCCM client. It became apparent that the existing Configuration Manager 2007 implementation was set to deploy clients to any discovered device automatically. I then went…

  • Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 Pull Distribution Points

One of the great features of Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 is the ‘Pull distribution point’. This allows you to specify certain distribution points (DP’s) in your Configuration Manager environment to pull content from others. You can specify multiple source DP’s for your pull DP which will give you a little more control over your traffic and where it goes.

There are lots of uses for this facility…
