Replacing Notepad for collecting those temporary snippets of info

  • Comments 1

I've been using Notepad for many a task over the years, one of which is a place to dump bits of info I collect across the day, or while i'm performing a task.

Now, I've never used this replacement before, and am truely gobsmacked at how easy it is to use. Microsoft OneNote, which is part of the Microsoft Office product range is helping me to organise these snippets, and making it extremely easy for me to return to the data. It provides a way to organise this data in to sections that can contain multiple pages. To understand this, you really need to install and sit down and begin using it.

It will never replace trusty Notepad, ever, but on my main desktop it allows me to organise these snippets of info in to sections and pages, sections such as "ConfigMgr Morning Checks" and pages such as "01/03/09" or "02/03/09" to represent the day I'm collecting data on. It also saves the data automatically, so no need to do so yourself. No more opening up notepad and saving a text file whenever you want to retain the notes, or ending up with TXT files building up in a temp area.

Classy tool, am enjoying using it. Check it out if you haven't already.

  • I'll still be using notepad to "normalise" text, I mean paste in to Notepad, remove special formatting (HTML, RTF et al), put it back on the clipboard and then move that ASCII in to the destination ... Sure I can Paste Special in some apps, but others I cannot, and this is how I straighten out my text!
